Same-Day Only
The Same-day only plugin stops employees from booking time off ahead: a request must start today, or in the past if the policy allows past dates.
When to use
Use this plugin when:
- The time off can only be known on the day, such as sickness or a sick child
- You want to prevent employees from “booking” sick days in advance
- Planned time off of this kind should go through the manager, not the employee
Parameters
This plugin has no settings. Adding it to the policy is enough.
How it works
When a request is submitted, the plugin compares its start date with today:
| Start date | Employee registering for themselves | Manager registering for the employee |
|---|---|---|
| Later than today | Blocked: “This policy only allows same-day or past registration” | Warning with the same text, and the manager can continue |
| Today | Allowed | Allowed |
| In the past | Allowed by this plugin (see below) | Allowed by this plugin (see below) |
“Today” is the workspace’s own calendar day, so a request made just after midnight counts the new day as today.
A manager here means someone who can approve the employee’s time off: the manager, someone above them in the manager chain, or an admin. Registering your own time off is always an employee request, whatever your role, so a manager cannot use the override for their own time off.
Only the start date is checked. A request that starts today may end on a later date, for example sickness expected to last the rest of the week.
Past dates
Same-day only does not, on its own, allow requests in the past. By default a time off request cannot start before today, so with this plugin alone only today can be registered. To also allow registration after the fact, add Allow past dates to the policy. Its settings then decide who may register past dates and how far back.
Open-ended time off
By default a request must have an end date. To let employees register sickness “until further notice” starting today, add Allow open-ended as well.
Examples
Sickness registration
Employees register their own sickness on the day, and their manager can add days they forgot:
- Add the Same-Day Only plugin to the sickness policy
- Add the Allow Past Dates plugin, and choose its settings for registration after the fact
- Optionally add Allow Open-Ended so sickness can be registered without an end date
An employee who tries to register sickness for next Monday is blocked. Their manager can still register it, after a warning.
Comparison with Planning requires approval
| Plugin | A request that starts after today |
|---|---|
| Same-day only | Is blocked for the employee. A manager can register it after a warning. |
| Planning requires approval | Can be submitted, but goes to the manager for approval |
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| An employee cannot register yesterday | Past dates are blocked by default. Add Allow past dates to the policy. |
| A manager could register a future date | Expected. For a manager registering for an employee, the block is only a warning. |
| An employee registered a request that runs into next week | Expected. Only the start date must be today or earlier. |
