Greenlandic Vacation (Grønlandsk ferie)
The Greenlandic vacation plugin grants holiday under the Greenlandic holiday act (Landstingslov nr. 10 af 12. november 2001 om ferie). It applies to employees who work in Greenland, including Danish state employees with a fixed workplace there.
The act works differently from Danish holiday. Holiday is earned over the calendar year and taken in the holiday year that follows it, from 1 February to 31 January. There is no concurrent holiday and no holiday in advance. So the days an employee earns during 2026 can be taken from 1 February 2027 to 31 January 2028.
When to use
Use this plugin for employees whose holiday follows the Greenlandic holiday act. The default of 25 days matches the act, so in most cases you add the plugin and change nothing.
Put it on its own policy, not on the same one as Danish Vacation . Then choose who gets it with the policy’s availability:
- By employment terms, when you have terms for staff in Greenland.
- By work country Greenland (GL), for employees stationed in Greenland. The work country comes from the employee’s employment, or from their organisational unit.
Parameters
| Parameter | Description | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Days per year | The annual entitlement. The act grants 25 working days. | 25 |
How it works
The entitlement is booked once a year, on 31 December, for the calendar year that ends that day. The days land in that year’s statement, but can only be taken from 1 February. Unused days lapse on 31 January a year later, at the end of the holiday year.
| Employment in 2026 | Booked 31 Dec 2026 | Can be taken from | Lapses |
|---|---|---|---|
| All year | 25,00 | 1 Feb 2027 | 31 Jan 2028 |
| From 1 February | 22,88 | 1 Feb 2027 | 31 Jan 2028 |
| From 15 January | 24,02 | 1 Feb 2027 | 31 Jan 2028 |
| Left 30 June | nothing | — | — |
- A whole year gives the full entitlement. An employee employed every day of the calendar year gets exactly 25 days.
- A part year gives 2,08 days per month. Each whole month of employment gives 2,08 days. A part month counts by its calendar days, so 17 of January’s 31 days give 1,14. A part year is not topped up to 25.
- Part-time makes no difference. A part-time employee earns the same 25 days, which are shorter days. On an hours account, the days are converted at the full-time working day.
Employees who leave
If employment ends on or before 31 December, nothing is booked for that year. The holiday they earned is paid out by payroll as holiday pay (feriegodtgørelse), not taken in mTime.
Days that arrive after 31 December
If a policy is assigned, an employment record entered, or a workspace brought online after 31 December, the days are booked on the day mTime first sees them. The 31 January lapse date is unchanged, so the days are not lost.
Transfer to the next holiday year
The act allows unused days to be carried over when work prevented the holiday, or by agreement (§ 20). That is a decision for each case, so make it as a manual adjustment on the employee’s account.
Examples
Staff in Greenland on their own employment terms
- Create a time account of type Time off for Greenlandic holiday, measured in days
- Add a time off policy pointing at that account
- Select the Greenlandic Vacation accrual plugin and keep 25 days
- Make the policy available to the employment terms for staff in Greenland
An employee employed all of 2026 receives 25,00 days on 31 December 2026, to be taken between 1 February 2027 and 31 January 2028.
Danish employees stationed in Greenland
Set up the policy as above, but make it available to work country Greenland (GL) instead. Make sure the Danish holiday policy is not available to the same employees.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| The days can’t be taken in January | Expected. The holiday year starts on 1 February, and the act does not allow holiday in advance. |
| An employee received fewer than 25 days | Expected if they were not employed for the whole calendar year — see the table above. |
| A part-time employee received the same as a full-time one | Expected. Under the act, a part-time employee gets 25 shorter days. |
| An employee who left got nothing | Expected when employment ended on or before 31 December. Their holiday is paid out by payroll. |
| Days disappeared on 31 January | Expected — the holiday year ended. Transfer days manually if § 20 applies. |
| The employee also earns Danish holiday | Both policies reach them. Narrow the Danish holiday policy so it doesn’t reach staff in Greenland. |
| A policy expiration plugin changes the lapse date | This plugin sets its own lapse date. Remove the expiration plugin from the policy. |
