Danish Apprentice Vacation

Danish Apprentice Vacation plugin configuration
Danish Apprentice Vacation plugin configuration

The Danish Apprentice Vacation plugin implements the special vacation rules for Danish apprentices (elever) under the vocational education law (erhvervsuddannelsesloven). This plugin handles the unique grant-based system where vacation days are assigned upfront rather than accrued monthly.

When to use

Use this plugin when:

  • The employee is an apprentice under a vocational training program
  • You need to comply with Danish apprentice vacation law
  • Vacation is granted based on employment start date
  • The employee receives 25 days on September 1st each year

For regular employees, use the Danish Vacation plugin instead.

Parameters

ParameterDescriptionDefault

| Disable summer accruals | Disable monthly summer accruals for Nov-Jan starters in their first year | false (enabled by default) |

How it works

Unlike regular Danish vacation which accrues monthly, apprentice vacation is granted upfront (tildelt) based on specific rules:

Initial grant (on employment start)

The initial grant depends on when the apprenticeship starts:

Start periodInitial grantWhen to use
Sept 1 - Oct 3125 daysImmediately, expires Dec 31 next year
Nov 1 - Dec 3115 daysMay 1 - Sept 30 next year
Jan 1 - June 3015 daysMay 1 - Sept 30 same year
July 1 - Aug 312.08 days/month workedBefore Dec 31 same year

September 1st grants

After the initial grant, apprentices receive 25 days on September 1st for the first two complete vacation years after starting their apprenticeship.

For example, if an apprentice starts:

  • January 2025: Gets 25 days on Sept 1, 2025 and Sept 1, 2026
  • November 2025: Gets 25 days on Sept 1, 2027 and Sept 1, 2028

Summer accruals

By default, apprentices who start in November-January receive additional monthly accruals in the summer of their first year (unless disabled):

Start monthSummer accruals
November1.64 days (June) + 2.08 days (July) + 2.08 days (August)
December1.64 days (July) + 2.08 days (August)
January1.64 days (August)

This ensures they have some vacation time available before their first September grant.

Automatic expiration

All grants follow standard Danish vacation law:

  • Vacation year runs from September 1 to August 31
  • All vacation expires on December 31 after the vacation year ends
  • This provides a 4-month grace period

Examples

Standard apprentice starting in September

An apprentice starting September 1, 2025:

  1. Sept 1, 2025: Receives initial grant of 25 days
  2. Sept 1, 2026: Receives 25 days (first complete year)
  3. Sept 1, 2027: Receives 25 days (second complete year)
  4. After completing apprenticeship: Transitions to regular vacation rules

Configuration:

  • Summer accruals not applicable for September starters

Apprentice starting in November

An apprentice starting November 1, 2025:

  1. Nov 1, 2025: Receives initial grant of 15 days
  2. Sept 1, 2027: Receives 25 days (first complete year after year-after-next)
  3. Sept 1, 2028: Receives 25 days (second complete year)

With summer accruals enabled:

  • July 1, 2026: Receives 1.64 days
  • Aug 1, 2026: Receives 2.08 days
  • Sept 1, 2026: Receives 2.08 days

Configuration:

  • Summer accruals are enabled by default (leave Disable summer accruals unchecked)

Apprentice starting in July

An apprentice starting July 15, 2025:

  1. Aug 1, 2025: Receives 2.08 days (for July work)
  2. Sept 1, 2025: Receives 2.08 days (for August work) + 25 days (yearly grant)
  3. Sept 1, 2026: Receives 25 days (second year)

Configuration:

  • Summer accruals only apply to Nov-Jan starters

Important notes

Granted vs. Earned: Apprentices receive days “på forskud” (in advance). While these days are granted upfront, only days actually earned at 2.08/month are settled to Feriekonto if the apprentice leaves before using all granted days.
Duration: This plugin is designed for the first two complete vacation years of an apprenticeship. After completing the vocational training, employees should transition to the regular Danish Vacation plugin.

Troubleshooting

IssueSolution
Apprentice not receiving September grantVerify employment start date and that they’re within the first two complete vacation years
Wrong initial grant amountCheck employment start date - should be 25 days for Sept-Oct, 15 days for Nov-June, monthly for July-Aug
Summer accruals not showingEnsure Disable summer accruals is unchecked (default) - only applies to Nov, Dec, Jan starters
Unexpected expiration datesAll vacation expires Dec 31 after the vacation year ends - this is by law
