Daily overtime
The Daily overtime counter measures time worked beyond the day’s own norm, one band at a time. Use it when an agreement counts overtime per day rather than per week, for example the first 2 hours above the norm at one rate and every hour after that at another.
When to use
- Overtime is calculated per day: a long Monday earns overtime even if a short Wednesday later brings the week back to the norm.
- Overtime is paid in several rates by hours, with any number of thresholds.
Daily overtime replaces the weekly Overtime and Additional hours counters. Don’t give an employee both, or the same hours are paid twice.
Parameters
| Setting | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Band starts at | Where the band starts, in hh:mm above the day’s norm. 0:00 for the first band. |
| Band ends at | Where the band ends, in hh:mm above the day’s norm. 0:00 means no upper limit. It must be after the start. |
| Excluded from overtime | Activities whose hours never count toward the band, such as a course. They still count as worked time for flex. |
How it works
Each day, the counter takes the time worked beyond that day’s norm and posts the part that falls inside its band. Every day stands alone: a short day posts nothing and never offsets a long one.
- The norm is the day’s norm after public holidays and time off in lieu, the same norm flex is measured against.
- A day without a norm (a weekend, or a day off in the work schedule) starts the bands at zero, so every hour worked on it counts as overtime.
Several rates: one policy per band
One counter is one band. For several rates, create one Weekly Registrations allowance policy per band, each with its own allowance activity, and give the employee all of them.
For example, with the first 2 hours above the norm at one rate and the rest at another:
| Policy | Band starts at | Band ends at | Allowance activity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overtime, first 2 hours | 0:00 | 2:00 | Overtime 50% |
| Overtime, after 2 hours | 2:00 | 0:00 | Overtime 100% |
Against an 8-hour norm, a week of 11, 9, 6, 8 and 8 hours plus 3 hours on Saturday gives:
| Day | Worked | Overtime 50% | Overtime 100% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | 11:00 | 2:00 | 1:00 |
| Tuesday | 9:00 | 1:00 | – |
| Wednesday | 6:00 | – | – |
| Saturday (no norm) | 3:00 | 2:00 | 1:00 |
Paying the allowance and banking the hours
Each allowance activity is paid through its own payroll code, so the payroll system applies the rate. Don’t add these activities as inputs to a settlement policy: an allowance used as a settlement input is banked instead of paid.
The hours themselves reach the employee’s flex account 1:1 as ordinary flex. In the example above, payroll receives 5:00 at 50% and 2:00 at 100%, while flex grows by 5:00: flex, unlike overtime, lets the short Wednesday offset 2:00.
